Now that most of the engineering guys are left with only few crdt hours to finish, and as this mean most of us are about to start their graduation project! I wanted to ask each of you about what is or what he thinks his project will be! I’ll start with mine! That day I was up at my dept signing my project proposal paper! ) I started tell him about my project but he seemed unconvinced, so I’ll start by making some points clear. In mechanical engineering we depend heavily on different type of analysis such as dimensionless analysis which give u the ability to stimulate huge models using much more smaller models! and we do depend on charts and tables and tooo many things! these tables and charts take tremendous efforts and time to be done! But yet people would look at it as nothing! In ME you need to make sure that ur model will mot fail through many stages, one of the lasts is named proto-typing which is very expensive but it is the last step be4 the model will come to life! so as it is very expensive and we are supposed as Mechanical engineers to minimize and optimize the use of every single source we have, it should not be conducted be4 it passes the theoretical tests including (my fav test) the finite difference analysis. so my project is all about generating charts, plots and tables of properties for a refrigerant named R-407c! It is a part of a professor’s research! So what are urs?

well, my graduatino project is determined, but i still didn’t look at it. first, i am doing it with a lebanese friend since we did all the previous big projects togather, and there is a professor who found the project that me and my friend gonna do, he sent us some spec sheets during the summer, but of course i didn’t bother looking at them, and supposedly it is big, i think it is something been patened in germany but not in US, and the plan to work on it a full year instead of one semster.
when i get more details, i will share.

mine is a “Beowulf “, which is basically a design for high-performance parallel computing clusters on inexpensive personal computer hardware, which is using a like Pentium 2, and Pentium 3 home computers , connected via a simple network, to achieve high performance tasks, through parallel computations, (all the PCs act like a single machine ) the idea is simple, but its soo powerful that the Super computer NASA using is a 2500 P2 and P3 computers connected togather, mine is simpler using a 4 P3 and a 3 P2 computers , and the project require to write some parts of the OS in order to configure The TCP /IP communications
did I talked about fda as a part of my project? no! I was giving the guys a little idea about what we do in ME! and buddy I hate design projects! our design profs sux! I do not know how they think! when u are given 5 questions as a h.w and u get 10/10 in 4 of the them while u got 6 or 5/10 and ur total mark is 2/10! how come! sick people! and severus the beowulf thingy! lol! Nice site! And S3d no it is not doing so! It is to make charts that can be used in our climate (hot climate) it is a hard thing to understand thermal sciences but I’ll go through it as simple as possible! it is more like plotting performance curves! do u know what is a performance curve? it is a dimensionless analysis where u get number of no dimensions and u achieve it by multiplying the prosperities of the system until all units cancels out! Strange, right? u can look at it on wikipedia! Anyways a simple dimensionless number is Reynolds number! Do u remember the first unit of physics at twjihi? it talks about fluids flow (laminar and turbulent) back at that time we used just to think that high speed flows are turbulent while indeed a flow with a speed of 0.2m/s and less can be turbulent depending on the type of the fluid, and the cross section of the flow. to overcome the problem of creating a plot for each type of fluid and for each cross section we can use Reynolds’s number to plot only one curve that can be used for all types of fluids and all cross sections. So now the performance of a refrigerant is a function of many things such as the temperature of the two mediums it works between (one hot while the other is cold), the work of the compressor, the mass flow rate of the refrigerant and many other things. Imagine that u want to plot a curve where u fix all properties and vary only one property to see how it effects the performance of the refrigerant, that will need endless plots and eternity. My job is to create such plots (still not easy but much more easier than what I’ve just said) tabulate some of the data, and create a computer program that do helps u define what u want. That is it. And may be I’ll need to create something like 10 plots with their tables and computer programs. is that enough? btw the FDA means finite difference analysis! We are using jargons here so sry

While I’m not supposed to be interpreting anything stated here, can someone explain more about the experimental/laboratory side of the work Yuri is gonna be doing on his project? I mean, I’m not 6amma3 enough to ask for the idea of the calculations and the paperwork but what are you gonna do practically? Are you gonna test something?
Oh, and about “my” graduation project: I think it’s gonna be some kind of hyper-reactive-rotary sucking system and Inshalla I will test it on every Doc that comes at my direction.
So far it’s going so badly. I thought I had the nerves, skills and experience to suck for instructors better than others but I proved myself wrong. 6eezi is not allowing me, I just can’t stomach it

1. Why don’t we just cool the pump (the fluid) instead of making new plots for the fluid that are just gonna help us understand what happens inside and not actually affect the effeciency of the pump? i.e what’s the practical value of these plots (in Jordan)?

you can’t go through projects with this idea in ur head, apparently many things are still not invented because not enough interested people in it. i used to think like that, but then i discovered this thinking is achivments stopper and it is pretty not true. think about google , well, we had search engines before, but still, they succeeded, i know this is differnt, but the idea is, it doesn’t matter that much if other thought about it or not. if it doesn’t exist doesn’t mean that it can’t be done.
Man it is not to cool the compressor (not pump, pump is for liquids while compressor is for gases and it is a huge difference) anyways we do use this charts to rate and select units! so it is important if u want I can show my refrigeration units (compressor, chillers, evaporator…etc) and u can see plots and tables for there performance at limited data. so you are only given the performance of these things at only given temp and pressure…etc which is called the nominal performance, and it is not a PhD thesis it is only something that need hard working. and man it is not that simple to understand a refrigeration cycle! compressors can not be cooled due to the huge thermal stresses (the inside will be very hot while the casing will be cooled remember the thick glass experiment back at the school may be at 5th grade?) and it is not even about cooling the compressor. the hot climate is the condenser (e.g. the coils at the back of the refrigerator if we are talking about such small units, or the thing out side the home when talking about air conditioning units) indeed in huge condenser u need many fans and sometimes water to cool this thing! and the difference between this thing temp and the ambient air (the hot climate at Jordan) is what we need to investigate its effect on the whole thing! and other things but this is the main thing! hope it is clear now! btw elune you are the only one here that remembers the enthalpy thingy right? though not as much as I know it bs the calculations are based on these things. for others the enthalpy is the ability of a system (such as a metal, gas liquid…etc) to do work and it is fixed for a given temperature and pressure and that why u need compressors in almost every mechanical system just to increase its ability to do work. that is all and yea what sad said is completely right what maters is what u likes in searching
